Cloud VPS WordPress Optimized: In 5 minutes or less

nginx-php

A Small Orange is today announcing the availability of our new WordPress Optimized Cloud VPS template, powered by NGinx 1.4, PHP 5.5 and MySQL Community 5.5. The template allows our Cloud VPS customers to deploy an optimized environment with up to date WordPress installation in 5 minutes or less.

The default WordPress installation, preconfigured with secure default options and an automatic update plugin provide customers the convenience of rapidly deploying a WordPress installation in 5 minutes or less. The optimized environment, powered by what is commonly referred to as a LEMP stack (Linux Nginx MySQL PHP), uses the latest stable versions of all software components. Together, the preconfigured WordPress installation and optimized LEMP stack ensure a secure, reliable and high performance platform which customers can depend upon.

The nuts and bolts of the LEMP stack have Nginx 1.4.2 acting as the web server component and using Nginx FastCGI support to handle PHP 5.5.1 requests through PHP-FPM server which is back ended by MySQL 5.5.31 and Opcode Caching using PHP 5.5′s new Zend Opcode Cache. The configurations for all components are performance optimized to ensure the entire stack can scale in a predictable and reliable fashion.

The WordPress Optimized template can be found at checkout under OS Templates, or inside a customers Cloud Command portal, with the template label “CentOS 6.4 x64 WordPress (LEMP PHP5.5 MySQL5.5)”. Upon deployment, or rebuild of an existing virtual machine, the customer need only login to their virtual machine over SSH and a welcome message will contain all details on how to access the new and fully up to date WordPress installation.

A summary below outlines the key features of the WordPress Optimized template.

  • Fully updated software and kernel packages, updated nightly.
  • Current version of WordPress with preconfigured ‘Automatic Updater’ plugin (wordpress & plugin updates enabled, theme updates disabled)
  • Stable maintained version of PHP 5.5.x , MySQL 5.5.x & NGinx 1.4.x
  • Performance tuned configuration values for PHP, MySQL, PHP-FPM and NGinx
  • Enhanced performance leveraging PHP 5.5′s new ZendOpcode Caching
  • MicroCache page caching to improve page load times and reduce load on PHP-FPM & MySQL
  • Full gzip compression of all compressible content, reducing page load times and improving performance for mobile users
  • Secure default installation including ssh based sftp server, software firewall with brute force protection and web server flood guard protection
  • Preinstalled convenience packages include: memcached, git, svn, htop, mytop, iftop and more

We have put together a knowledge base article covering various configuration and setup details related to the WordPress Optimized LEMP stack which can be found at:

You should also make notes on if this will work with Cloudflare. As I would like to know if it conflicts.

      Jonah,
Thank you for the feedback, we will include details on Cloudflare within the KB document. That said though, the Cloud VPS WordPress stack will most certainly work with Cloudflare, since it is a dedicated nginx setup with no reverse proxy.

Would there be any benefit to still using Cloudflare with this setup? Would there be any duplication of services? Example – I found it better to remove W3 Total Cache plugin versus using it along with Cloudflare. Seemed to offer better performance using Cloudflare only.

The use of CloudFlare offers a number of benefits such as resilience to DDoS attacks, additional content optimizations and content distribution. I am of the mindset that a good setup is something you can set and forget, which is what CloudFlare offers. The utility of W3 TC with CloudFlare enabled is more a decision each customer needs to make but in keeping with the set and forget approach, a simple setup is king which W3 TC can be anything but simple at times.

What kind of performance improvement does this setup have over the standard Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP already in my ASO VPS?

The WordPress Optimized LEMP stack is intended for specialized hosting of large or high traffic WordPress installations in which a dedicated web server is required. It is in this role that the LEMP stack excels, achieving at scale, a very consistent and high degree of performance. The setup has no control panel, no e-mail server other than a local MTA for outbound e-mail and is bare bones in nature to ensure it remains a specialized, high performance solution.

We will soon be offering an Nginx Acceleration stack as a transparent drop-in solution for our cPanel based customers. We will put up a blog post in the next week or two that details this offering, check back soon.

Great service. ASO already has a very fast set up, with Nginx it will skyrocket!!!

    HI there
Is there a way to have this support multiple wordpress installations in the same ?VPS. From what I read it seems that it works only with one installation.
Also any future plans to have this available with cpanel in the same template?

    Thanks

    Eric

The WordPress Optimized LEMP stack can very easily be modified to host multiple WordPress installations. It is a self contained environment and we provide an initial set of configurations and WordPress installation which can be used as a template to add additional users / configurations.

    HI Ryan
Are you referring to this: http://cpxstack.sysally.net/ ?

      Eric,
We operate and maintain our own in-house nginx acceleration stack which runs as a transparent reverse proxy performing content caching and optimization. Our nginx acceleration stack has been in use internally at ASO for over a year on our shared and business shared fleet providing reliable and high performance results for our customers and shared fleet alike.

Although cpxstack is certainly a promising tool set, it is one that imposes heavy handed changes on a cPanel server and is not ideal for our customers or shared servers alike.

    Great!!
Can’t wait for it to be ready for cpanel.
Just to clarify, the nginx acceleration stack will not be configured as a reverse proxy right?

    Thanks

    M.

Yes, it will operate as a transparent reverse proxy accelerator. It is a non-intrusive setup, completely compatible with cPanel as well as remote services such as CloudFlare and overall provides for much better scaling while reducing the load on Apache. It has been shown on our shared server fleet to reduce the overall system load along with improve page load times by a very tangible margin. In addition it also helps systems perform significantly better under HTTP based DDoS attacks and/or situations where sites receive sudden, valid, spikes in traffic (e.g: /.’d).

So it will not be a LEMP stack, like the one you introduced in this blog post?

The LEMP stack is actually what I am after, I would like to deploy this template to different customers accounts, if not possible existing ones, then all the new ones. It would be terrific to have a template like this + cpanel.
Is there a way to add cpanel to the LEMP stack ?

    Thanks

A cPanel installation is not compatible with the LEMP stack. You are best to wait till our release of the NGinx Accelerated cPanel templates.

We currently offer a PHP5.4 and 5.5 LEMP and WordPress Optimized LEMP template. Additionally, we offer a cPanel PHP5.4 NGinx template. All of these templates are available on checkout for new Cloud VPS customers or within your Cloud Command management area for existing customers. To that end, if you have an already in production cPanel instance, you can put in a support ticket and ask our team to install our NGinx Acceleration stack onto your VPS for you and they will be happy to do so.
