Social Media Tips for Small Business Owners

Social media is now the place to be for businesses. Platform leader Facebook has evolved into a place people go for social interactions, business updates, product recommendations and industry news. Now is the time to really build an active presence on social media platforms and use them to your advantage as a small business owner. Never before has such a large audience been so accessible at such a low cost.

Here are tips on how to effectively build your social media presence in 2015:

Target your Audience

Marketing to a target audience is one of the most basic marketing tools, and it certainly applies on social media platforms. Appealing to an “ideal customer”, in order to appeal specifically to a demographic that has already proven their interest in your product, is marketing common sense. Know who your customer is and target your posts and content to engage them.

Strategize and Schedule

On social media, it is all about consistency. You need to be reliable and a constant presence for your followers in order to keep them interested. There is a fine line between to too much and not enough, which you will have to find through experimentation. Once you get the right balance, you can write your posts, or hire them out, and schedule them in each week on a consistent basis.

Mix Up Content

No one wants to see the same thing over and over again, it gets boring. Instead, post about different types of things on different days of the week. You can post questions to solicit user generated content or photos, quizzes, industry news, product releases, etc.

Use Social Selling

Social media is an opportunity to come into direct contact with a customer. In another situation, that would mean that you're going to try to make a sale to them. Social media is different – yes it's a marketing tool, but requires a more subtle approach. You want to build a relationship with customers, get them to like you, offer customer service and offer products about 20% of the time.

Build relationships with customers

Regular, interesting content is important, but so is responding to customer feedback. Social media is a great way to do that, and it also fosters a sense of loyalty and connection between you and your customers.

Reach customers worldwide

The best part about the internet, from a marketing perspective, is that it can reach people almost anywhere. Many small businesses are restricted locally to a particular state, city, or even neighborhood. With social media and the internet, however, there are people all over the globe who you can sell to.

Expand your professional network

Social media is a great way to stay in touch with other professionals in the same field. There are also networks set up for businesses in all kinds of industries, along with social media networks set up for professionals in general, such as LinkedIn.

Improve your customer service As mentioned previously, social media is a great way to get customer feedback and a great way to respond to it as well. You can use the platforms to field questions and respond to customer feedback; both good and bad. As you can see, social media is a very powerful tool for your business. When used appropriately, you can reap the benefits of a larger reach, a better connection with your customer base, a presence in your industry and, as a result, more sales.
