Backing up WordPress is one of the most important maintenance steps in running a website based on the platform. You never really know what might end up going wrong, and having the latest backup readily available will make any kind of recovery you might have to do, a whole lot easier.
Fortunately, there are many plugins available for WordPress users to handle the task of backing up files. Not all of them are as useful or easy to use as others, however, and the sheer number of plugins out there can make it difficult to pick one to use. This article is an overview of a few of the most popular backup plugins and the pros and cons of each.
VaultPress is one of the most well-regarded and popular backup services. This is for good reason, too –it was developed by Matt Mullenweg, who was a co-founder of WordPress. It uses an automatic cloud-based system that saves a backup at regular intervals. This way you don’t have to remember to do it manually.
They have an easy to use interface, and setting up or using VaultPress is really just a matter of a few clicks. It’s got a subscription based pricing system, which is about $5 a month. The only real downside of it is the expense, which can mount especially if you’re running multiple websites using WordPress and want to back them all up.
BackWPup is a pretty simple tool – it creates backups and allows you to store them on a cloud you have access to (Dropbox, Amazon S3, etc.) or on your hard drive. You can schedule automatic backups, or do them manually, and the interface for doing either of those things or restoring a website is fairly simple. BackWPup is free to download, but there’s also a paid version that comes with more support, the ability to store things on Google drive, and some other features. The biggest cons to this solution is the lack of official support on the free version.
Duplicator is actually a site migration tool. It lets you move a WordPress site’s content from a now defunct URL, to another newer one. It also lets you create backups. However, because this function is in addition to its main purpose, their backup technology is pretty rudimentary, and can only be done manually. This makes it a poor choice for your main method of backing WordPress sites up, but it is free to download.
