Improving Your Website’s Navigation

Website navigation is one of those things where, when done correctly, you hardly notice it at all, but when done poorly, you can’t get off the website fast enough.

Referring to a system set in place that allows users to move around the site, website navigation can be implemented using many different structures and can include menus, links and buttons. Regardless of how you choose to set up your website’s flow, the goal is always the same: You want your users to be able to get from Point A to Point B the fastest and easiest way possible – just like navigating a neighborhood in your car.

One way you can improve your navigation is by making sure that your users can get just about anywhere on your website from where they already are. In other words, they shouldn’t have to hit the back button six times to visit a page they already left. (In fact, they shouldn’t have to hit the back button at all.) You should also make sure your navigation makes sense. Organize your menus and categorize your dropdown boxes logically. You should also check for broken links. Just like you don’t enjoy driving through construction, your website users won’t enjoy being dropped off at the 404. Lastly, a simplistic, mobile-friendly design certainly doesn’t hurt.
