Writing Effective Meta Descriptions

As you’re building your website, you’ll have the option to add meta descriptions. Meta descriptions, or the blurbs of text that are included beneath your website’s title tags in search engine listings, is something people sometimes forget to spend time on; however, having well-written meta descriptions can help accumulate more page views.

Your meta descriptions should be longer than your title tags – about the length of a tweet or 140 characters. They should be attention-grabbing so users want to click on the link. It’s also important that they be an accurate depiction of your webpage. Crafting a compelling but inaccurate meta description just so people will click on your site will quickly send them away, hurting your search engine optimization, so it’s always best to stay true to what you do.

But instead of a bland summary outlining your products and services, focus on the end result you provide. This is more likely to attract potential customers. Lastly, while it’s okay to add a keyword or two in your meta description, and you should, don’t go crazy with it. A bombardment of keywords is not appealing to humans or computers.

Should you neglect to add a meta description, don’t worry. Search engines will create one for you by using a portion of the webpage’s copy; however, if given the chance, it’s always better to put yourself in charge and decide what your own meta descriptions should be.
